Working outside for long periods of time in all types of weather is a fact of life for construction workers. Each season brings its own challenges. During summer months, prolonged exposure to heat and humidity, especially when wearing protective clothing, can lead to health risks if precautions aren’t taken.

Worker carrying a hard hat filled with water bottles. To mitigate the effects of working outdoors in the heat, our contractors follow a heat advisory protocol to help protect workers. Trucks are equipped with coolers and bottled water and sunscreen is provided to workers. Rigorous and physical activity is scaled back and supervisors encourage workers to take frequent breaks.  The heat advisory protocol also educates workers on the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and to ensure that medical attention is sought should any symptoms appear.
